Heard spelling
infloresscence
Spelled inflorescence. a doubled consonant
Where does the doubled s come from?
From the stress. The word lands hard on that syllable, and a hard short syllable in English usually gets a doubled consonant behind it.
Blossom, possum and lesson all follow the rule. Inflorescence does not, because there is only one s in it to begin with: the sound comes from the sc pair, and doubling the s pushes the word to fourteen letters and away from its Latin.
