Term
perianth
Perianth is stressed at the front and everything after the first syllable arrives flat. The eight spellings below are attempts to write down that flat middle.
Greek peri, around, and anthos, flower. Both halves are common enough elsewhere, in perimeter and in anthology, which is literally a gathering of flowers. The join between them lands on an unstressed vowel, and that is the letter people lose.

- Meaning
- The perianth is the outer envelope of a flower, calyx and corolla together, sepals and petals counted as one structure. Where the two are alike, as in a tulip, the parts are called tepals.
