funikulas
Spelled funiculus. two changes at once
Funikulas gets two things wrong for the same reason.
The k and the a are both attempts to write down sounds that Latin spells differently.
The final syllable is -lus, an ordinary Latin ending, and it is unstressed, so it arrives as a vague uh. The c before u is hard and always has been. Neither the k nor the a can be heard as wrong, which is why this word has to be learned by its parts: funis, rope, plus the diminutive -culus.
